About Us

Located in the southwestern part of Duluth, Minnesota, at the western tip of Lake Superior and near the St. Louis River, the Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School serves a predominantly blue-collar community and 400 preschool through fifth grade students. In 1914 "Old Stowe" was built and during the fall of 1994 "New Stowe" was built on the same site; its architecture designed to enhance its environmental theme.

The program developed at Stowe Elementary School is the result of many people and organizations working together to help our kids and ultimately their families develop a knowledge and understanding of, and sensitivity for, the delicate balance necessary to sustain our home - the earth. Our children are taught to use their knowledge within their environment; to protect, to preserve, to nurture, and to respect.

Service Learning Project

Fall 2011
Tree Planting

Stowe Elementary students took lessons from the classroom to the woods. Students and members of the community planted trees on campus and throughout the woods. The tree-planting was part of a service learning project, teaching the kids the significance of trees. "It's really important for the children to understand where their things come from and to respect the environment and to respect nature," said Rheanna Letsos, True North Americorps Student Services Advocate. The students planted fifty seedlings which will grown into full white pine trees.

Many thanks to our project partners: Jerome Blazevic, Porcupine Hollow Farm, Stream Corps, Paul Davis, Billy Davis, Greg Hanson, Tom Kasper and the City of Duluth.
