Special Services

District 709 Special Services department provides inclusive and comprehensive educational programs for students with disabilities from birth through 21 years of age, as required by law.  Each student who receives special education services must meet State of Minnesota mandated eligibility criteria, and have an Individual Education Program (IEP) which describes the student's present level of performance, special education needs, goals, objectives, and services. Most students receive services in their neighborhood school and in a regular class setting with peers, when appropriate.

Students can receive services in the following disability categories: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Deaf-Blind, Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Emotional or Behavioral Disorders, Developmental Cognitive Disability, Developmental Delay, Other Health Disabilities, Physically Impaired, Severely Multiply Impaired, Specific Learning Disability, Speech or Language Impairments, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Visually Impaired.

The Duluth School District 709 special education data reflects the national trend of a steady growth rate in the number of students identified with a disability who are eligible for services.
