The Learning Services Department comprises curriculum, instruction and assessment; curriculum specialists and coaches; teacher mentors; ELL; Families in Transition; and Service Learning. The Learning Services team is overseen by the Office of the Assistant Superintendent.
Curriculum, assessment and staff development personnel review curriculum, align learner outcomes to state standards, create the scope and sequence of instruction, and coordinate the adoption of materials, textbooks, educational supplies and software.
The department provides professional development opportunities for teachers, special programs for new teachers and a mentorship program for those instructors new to the Duluth system.
Staff members coordinate testing, a function which expanded in recent years due to increased requirements from the state and federal government. The department helps staff make good use of the data by showing teachers how to use test results to change instruction and raise student achievement.
