EXCEL and FOCUS

(K-8 Dropout Prevention Programs)

EXCEL prepares Duluth's K-8 students to succeed in school and reach graduation on time by providing extra help in academic skills, goal setting, and getting along in school. The EXCEL program is held in all middle schools and many elementary schools in the Duluth district.  Students meet before or after regular school hours in a small group with a teacher from their school - generally three hours a week.  Summer programming is also offered to EXCEL students on a schedule that is based on each school's needs and goals.

FOCUS  is a School-Within-a-School program at  Woodland and Morgan Park Middle schools which assists middle level students for two to three  class periods each day.  It is a small-group program, which emphasizes math, English and content area reading development thrugh READ 180, Trans English and Trans Math.  Students chosen for the  program have experienced serious difficulties with their traditional school program.

Enrollment: All enrollment is handled by the school counselor at the home school.  The counselor and other school staff members identify students they think will benefit from the program.  Parents' permission is required for enrollment, and parents may contact the school counselor to request enrollment for their child.

Contact your school counselor or principal for more information.
