2010-11

Socks for Tots

Teacher: Janine Dahlquist - FACS (East High School)

Funding: Youth in Philanthropy Northland Foundation, Minnesota Power

Students in a Child Development course regularly visit first graders at Congdon Park to observe developmental stages and rates.  Students observed some of the first graders use Bethany Crisis Shelter's services and decided to knit socks for children using the shelter.  The class knit approximately 30 pairs of socks.

Rockin' the Dirt, Healing the Hill: Restoring Enger Tower Global Youth Service Day

Teachers: Terrie Monson - 9-12th grade Plant Biology, Dani Westholm - 9-12th grade English (Unity High School), Mike DesCombaz - 9-12th grade ASD III (Central-Denfeld High Schools)

Funding: Disney Friends for Change

Plant biology students applied their knowledge of invasive species by training volunteers about invasive species identification and removal at Enger Park on GYSD.  Students assisted with clearing buckthorn from approximately 2 acres of the park.  ASD III students assisted with identification, tagging, and removal of invasive buckthorn plants at Enger Park in preparation for and as a part of Global Youth Service Day. 

English students wrote poetry inspired by Enger Tower and Park as part of their poetry unit.  They worked with Duluth Poet Laureate, Sheila Packa, in a poetry workshop.  Students presented their writings at Enger Park on GYSD.  Mayor Don Ness was present to proclaim the official observance of GYSD.

Italian Dinner for Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk

Teacher: Glenn D'Amour - 9-12th grade Culinary Arts (Secondary Tech. Ctr.)

Funding: Service-Learning Northland Award

The staff and students at STC hosted an Italian dinner as a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk in the fight against breast cancer.  STC was inspired to host the dinner in support of a staff member who was diagnosed with breast cancer.  The graphic arts students designed posters and tickets while culinary arts students planned, prepared, and served all aspects of the Bolognese spaghetti dinner.

Art for Enger Tower

Teacher: Terry Norton 9-12th grade Art (Central-Denfeld High Schools)

Funding: Service-Learning Northland Award

Art students studied the history of Enger Tower in partnership with the City of Duluth. Students created artwork inspired by Enger Tower, including photography, drawing, painting, ceramics, jewelry, and stained glass work.  Artwork was donated to a silent auction and local businesses with all proceeds benefitting the Enger Tower Restoration Project.  Nearly $2000 was raised.

The Central Connection   

Teacher: Laurie Kovacovic – Central High School, Spanish

Funding: Service Learning Northland Award

Spanish III students from Central High School gave Morgan Park Spanish I students a tour of their future high school in Spanish. 

 

The Value of Bike Helmet Use

Teachers: Mary Jo Anvid, William Zwak, Hamilton Smith, and Robert Fox- 9th Grade Science, Central and Denfeld

Funding: Service-Learning Northland Award

Ninth grade students researched the importance of bike helmet use to collaboratively create a safety campaign for the community.  Students from both schools with their community partners held a helmet give-away in the spring.

 

 Recipes for Health

Teacher: Heidi Bowen – East High School

Funding: Service-Learning Northland Award

East High School Health students analyzed their diets and sources of food, then set goals to improve their eating habits.  Students shared their nutrition knowledge with students from Congdon Park Elementary School by cooking healthy snacks and sharing recipes they had created.

 

Listening is an Act of Love

Teacher: Tami Stafstrom-Allen – 7-12th Grade, Woodland Hills Academy

Funding: Service-Learning Northland Award

After reading Listening is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life From The Story Corps Project, students at Woodland Hills Academy interviewed community members from local veteran and senior groups.  The purpose of the interviews was to build a local archive for the community while learning about local history and communication skills. 

2008-09

Community Health Fair

 

Teacher:  Laura LaFontaine - Health Teacher, Denfeld High School

 

Funding: Service Learning Northland Award

 

Students at Denfeld High School joined students from Morgan Park Middle School to organize and conduct a Community Health Fair.

 

Music and Presentations at Edgewood Vista

Teacher: Jenny Masterson - Special education (DCD) teacher, Denfeld High School

 

Funding: Service Learning Northland Award

 

Students sang songs and made presentations at Edgewood Vista and other group homes. The students had an opportunity to practice appropriate behavior in public, speaking in front of others, and worked together as a team to be able to perform together.

 

Work with Life House

  

Teacher: Catherine Nachbar – Grades 11/12 Sociology, Central High School

 

Funding: Service Learning Northland Award

 

Students connected with Life House to understand how this organization addresses the needs of local youth living in transition, poverty, and unemployment. The students created Random Act of Kindness Kits for distribution at Life House.

   

Reading Buddies

 

Teacher: Jean Priest – Grades 9-12, Special Education, Denfeld High School

 

Funding: Service Learning Northland Award

 

Students who were below their grade level in reading and writing developed and improved these skills by tutoring kindergartners.  As a final project, the students wrote and illustrated a short story for their kindergarten reading partners. 

 

Alternative Energy: The Building of a Solar Panel

 

Teacher: Terrie Monson – Environmental Science and Chemistry- ALC & Unity

 

Funding: Service Learning Northland Award

Environmental Science and Chemistry students at Unity High School partnered with CHUM and other local businesses to build a solar panel. Students discussed what types of service CHUM provides and then wrote letters to local businesses to ask for donations of parts to build the solar panel. They discussed alternative energy and environmental policy before building the panel. In Chemistry, students studied chemical reactions and changes that allow solar panels to work. The finished solar panel was donated to CHUM as an alternative source of energy.

 

 Financial Planning Lesson Plan

Teacher:  Angela Florestano- Duluth East High School

 

Funding: Service Learning Northland Award

 

Economic students learned about financial planning and savings and developed lesson plans related to this topic. Following the completion of their lesson plan development, students visited Woodland Middle School to teach these lessons to the middle school students.

 

2007-08

 

Mural for the Lake Superior Zoo

 

Teacher: Jolane Sundstrom, Adult Learning Center

 

Funding: Service Learning Northland Award

 

Students at ALC created a carpet mural to enhance appearance and absorb noise in the Lake Superior Zoo's primate center.

    

Spanish Vocabulary Lessons

 

Teacher: Ann Kucinski- Spanish IV and V, Central High School

 

Funding: Service Learning Northland Award

 

Spanish students developed vocabulary lessons and other topics of interest to teach students at Lowell Elementary School. Central students traveled to Forest Lake to spend the day at a Spanish immersion elementary school. 

 

Chemistry Lessons and Presentations

 

Teacher: Cindy Grindy,  - Honors Chemistry, East High School

 

Funding: Service Learning Northland Award

 

Students prepared and presented chemistry lessons to elementary students at Congdon and Lester Park Elementary Schools. The presentations consisted of 10-15 science demonstrations that were developed in engaging and age-appropriate ways. Chemistry students not only taught the younger students science lessons but expressed an enthusiasm for science.

 

Disease/Health Concern Brochures

 

Teacher: Laura LaFontaine- Health, Denfeld High

 

Funding: Service Learning Northland Award

 

Students created brochures about diseases/health concerns that they have been affected by.  The brochures were donated to the Teen Resource Center at Planned Parenthood.

 

Revitalize Lake Superior Zoo

 

Teacher: Al Chepelnik - Basic Woodworking, Central High School

Funding: Service Learning Northland Award

Basic Woodworking students at Central High School refurbished garbage can liners as well as park benches at the Lake Superior Zoo.
