DEVELOPING A SERVICE-LEARNING PROJECT

Projects can be developed through two approaches:

1.  Start with curricular objectives:  Identify the state or district academic standards/objectives you want to address and ask whether there is a natural tie to service that will help you do that.

2. Start with a community need: Identify a need in the school or community and consider how you can connect it to curricular content.

You can use the following attached documents to design a service-learning project using the Understanding by Design method (UbD).  The UbD approach starts with the academic outcomes.  Follow the instructions provided on Activities 1-3.  For activity 2 you will need your academic standards for your curricular area.  These are available at the MN Dept of Ed website.  For Activity 3, refer to the attached Character, Civic Ed Goals document.  After completing the three activities, use the completed charts to complete the Unit Plan.  A sample for a literacy unit is attached.
