Philosophy
Lincoln Park Middle School nurtures the development of responsible, thoughtful students.  Middle School students are emerging adolescents experiencing profound changes intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally.  These changes require unique learning environments where students can achieve success, are challenged and mature at their own development rate.

Our school provides a transitional environment for students as they move from elementary into high school years.  Learning experiences build upon and strengthen basic skills, and provide exploration of new areas of interest giving direction for future choices.  students will be challenged to explore, to create, to make decisions and to actively participate in and be accountable for their learning.

Attendance
Regular attendance is an extremely important requirement for all students.  There are many reasons why good attendance is important.  Here are four:

  1. Good attendance is a part of your permanent record and of genuine concern to any future employer.
  2. If you are not present for classroom activities, it is difficult to "make up" important daily activities and experiences.
  3. Many studies have shown that time spent on task within classes greatly increase the amount of learning that takes place.
  4. It is the law!  Every child between seven and sixteen years of age is required to be enrolled in school.

When a student is absent, the parent or guardian shall notify the school at 218-336-8880 x3400 by 11:00 a.m. the morning of the absence or with a written explanation of the absence upon the student's return.  This note should include the date of absence, reason for absence, the parent/guardian's signature and a phone number where the parent/guardian can be reached for possible verification.

Advanced Absence Procedure
Excuses for absences for family, family religious services or other family occasions must be received and approved by the school before the absence occurs.  Once approved, it is the student's responsibility to get the assignments form the classroom teachers and have the work completed prior to leaving.  If the assigned work is not completed in advance, the teacher has the right to exercise the option of not giving credit for it.  When a student is absent (excused) in excess of 10 days he/she may be required to have a doctor's slip to be excused for further absences.

Visitors
Persons who come to Lincoln Park Middle School to discuss school business or conference with a member of the staff, must go to immediately to the main office. All visitors must sign in and receive a Lincoln Park visitors badge.

Discipline
The goals of discipline are to allow individuals to become self disciplined with mature attitudes and socially acceptable standards of conduct.  The entire Morgan Park staff understands how important it is to have a safe learning environment.  We want all children to feel safe, have the best opportunity to succeed, and have a learning environment free from unnecessary disruption(s)/distractions.

At the heart of Lincoln Park's discipline plan is the "Discipline Referral".  Referrals are distributed to teachers to use if students are unable to follow classroom and school standards of conduct.  The Student Policy Handbook and Lincoln Park's Student and Parent Handbook is sent to all enrolled students at the beginning of the year.  Students will receive a referral if they choose to display behavior(s) that fit into the 5 following broad descriptions.

Inappropriate behavior of refusal to follow rules in ISS may result in 1 - 5 days out of school suspension or additional ISS.

* These consequences will be followed, but depending on the severity of the action steps may be skipped.

Continued office referrals of three or more in a short period of time will also result in the loss of privilege o attending school sponsored activities for a period of time.

Harassment and Violence
Our school district believes that being able to work and learn in a safe and respectful environment is important. Every student and adult has the right to feel safe and comfortable at school. Behaviors that tend to make people feel unsafe, harassed or embarrassed such as name calling, gossiping, bullying, or threats of any kind are prohibited by school district policy. If someone is harassing you, you have the right to get help from school with this problem. Please tell Denise Clairmont, Principal or Adrian Norman, Assistant Principal, or any staff member you feel comfortable with at Lincoln Park. It is expressly and specifically prohibited to harass anyone regarding sex, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, religion or religious practice, disability or other types of harassment defined in Policy 4015. Copies of this policy are printed in the student policy handbook.

Transportation and Busing
Transportation is a service and a privilege provided to eligible students in the Duluth School system. All district and building discipline policies apply to student behavior during transportation to and from school and school sponsored activities. Transportation personnel will forward all bus conduct reports to the transportation office and to the building principal. If transportation privileges are suspended from students, it is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to provide transportation to and from school.

Disruptive, distracting, or destructive conduct of pupils that interferes with the safe and orderly operation of the bus will result in the following:

  • 1st Offense - Student conference, parent / guardian notification.
  • 2nd Offense - Up to 1 week suspension of bus privileges.
  • 3rd Offense - Up to 1 month suspension of bus privileges.
  • 4th Offense - May result in suspension of all bus privileges for the remainder of the year.

Note: Report to local police of misbehavior on a school bus causing an immediate and substantial danger to self or surrounding persons or property is required by law.

Note to Parent(s)/Guardian(s)
The school or parent may request a meeting when it is necessary to discuss concerns regarding your child.

If students reach eight referrals they will be placed in the in school suspension room for one day. Parents will be notified by phone if possible, or a letter will be sent home. If parents support our system of discipline and follow through with consequences at home when referrals occur, it makes the system more effective.
